A Return to Real Design

We are all so embarrassed by our own knowledge and education these days. We shy away from displaying any interest or enthusiasm for anything ‘artsy’ or ‘intellectual’. We’re terrified of being labelled pretentious or pompous by our friends, we can’t allow our ‘ordinary geezer’ credentials to be undermined by a passion for anything more esoteric than football or celebrity magazines. This attitude is probably a reaction to the 1980s when knowledge of art or designer chairs or suchlike became equated with empty posturing. We’re allowed to be sophisticated these days as long as that sophistication doesn’t extend beyond buying a particular moisturiser, hair gel or fashion magazine.

But we’ve forgotten that the great minds of the past and the present have never lived in dreaming spires, never separated themselves from the pragmatics of existence, but always focussed upon the practical reality of the world we live in. The architect and designer Le Corbusier was very much grounded in the reality of our world; his work – which ranged from housing developments to designer chairs – was motivated by the desire to create a comfortable and practical living environment for all, not just a select wealthy few. His contemporaries, such as Ludwig Mies van Der Rohe and  Charles and Ray Eames, were equally driven by a wish to improve the quality of life of everyone and make everyday living a more pleasurable experience. Contemporary furniture designers such as Christophe Pillet are now returning to these principles; though the care and attention to detail they invest in something as seemingly trivial as chais longue chairs (or chaise lounge chairs if you prefer) may seem ridiculous to some, it can’t be denied that their work can transform a drab environment into something genuinely stylish and comfortable.

It’s time to grow up. It’s time to cast off adolescent smirking. It’s time to say ‘My new chais longue chairs are inspired by the work of Charles Eames, aren’t they cool’ without sarcasm or embarrassment.
