Staff making use of company parcel couriers

It is common for companies to make use of courier services to send items out to customers, clients and so on. However, new research suggests that workers are taking advantage of such provisions for personal use, at potentially significant cost to their employers.

A survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Collect+ revealed that one in ten of those questioned admitted that they make use of parcel couriers via work to send ten parcels or more a year.

In total, this is said to cost UK enterprises more than £80 million annually.

Meanwhile, it was also found that a third of employees questioned send parcels through work to avoid queuing up at Post Offices. Also, a quarter of respondents claimed that Post Office opening hours made it impossible for them to use the service during working days.

Furthermore, 15 per cent of individuals polled made use of courier services to have items sent to their places of work, rather than their homes. Six per cent did so because the goods they were receiving goods of an embarrassing nature.

Among the more unusual items sent to workplaces included a life-sized leprechaun, a machete and ecclesiastical items.

Commenting on the findings, Collect+ chief executive officer Mark Lewis said: “For many working people, Post Office opening hours just aren’t convenient and the idea of joining an ever longer queue as the number of Post Offices is reduced isn’t anyone’s idea of a fun lunch hour.

“With the huge growth in popularity of online shopping and the ease with which items can be purchased, people are also demanding greater convenience in how their parcels are delivered and returned.”

At present, firms may be getting stricter about staff use of parcel couriers in light of the tough economic conditions affecting the UK and many other countries around the world.
