Canary Island Holidays are as Popular as Ever

For many decades, holidays in the Canary Islands have been extremely popular. This is not surprising when you consider that the islands boast over 200 miles of beaches.

The rest of the landscape is extremely varied. This means that no matter what kind of holiday you enjoy you will find something for you in The Canaries. For example, the highest mountain in Spain, the Pico del Teide, is located on Tenerife.

Over the years, the islands have evolved to cater for new kinds of holidaymakers. The islands populations have realised that it is important to offer more than beach sun and sand holidays. Over the past few years, they have developed their ecotourism offering.

An Overview of the Main Islands

Tenerife – is the largest of the islands. It is also the most populous. and the one that attracts the most tourists. Every year around 5 million people visit the island. It is also home to one of the world’s largest carnivals, the Carnival Santa Cruz.

Fuerteventura – has UNESCO biosphere reserve status. The island is famous for offering more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year. It is not a particularly overdeveloped island, therefore it is still possible to enjoy its rugged natural beauty.

Gran Canaria – is the second-biggest island of the group. It has a very diverse mix of climates and landscape. It is best known for its white dune beaches and picturesque villages. Again, UNESCO has identified parts of the island as a biosphere reserve.

Lanzarote – is the fourth largest island in the group. It too is extremely diverse when it comes to biology there are over 500 different kinds of plants growing on the island. Many of which are not found elsewhere. It has some of the most stunning beaches in the world many of which have not been ruined by over development. The Playa Blanca is particularly popular.

La Palma – is the last of the most popular tourist islands in the group. It also offers beautiful beaches.

The rest of the islands in the group are much smaller and have much less well-developed tourist industries. However, it is still possible to enjoy staying on one of the smaller islands.
