Do stoves still make sense in modern homes

When many people think of stoves for the home, they tend to imagine that stereotypical image of a nice, warm fire in the living room of a historic property at night, perhaps with a stone floor and a cat sat on the rug. What they don’t necessarily imagine, in other words, is a thoroughly modern, 21st century home in which the stove is no means out of place, whether in visual or practical terms. And yet, a stove – especially a multi fuel one – could actually make perfect sense for a wide range of current-day homeowners.

Reasons for this naturally include the visual qualities that a stove brings compared to an electric fire, with its flickering flames often bringing homeowners comfort through those long, harsh winters. These appliances are also now available in a wide range of styles and designs to suit the similarly wide range of properties for which they may be bought, and can even be used with their doors either open or closed, although the latter is easily the more efficient arrangement. However, there are also some surprising monetary reasons for people buying a stove for their home.

With energy bills having crept up in recent times, many people have been looking for cheaper ways to heat their home, and using multi fuel stoves has been found by the Solid Fuel Technology Institute to be half as expensive as gas or oil heating, and only a third of the cost of electric heating. These findings also presumed that the stove owners would have to pay for the necessary coal and wood, with those residents living next to woodlands or the countryside actually often able to source at least some of that wood for nothing.

With multi fuel appliances also having the obvious benefit of a choice of fuels, which is handy as the prices of each fuel source vary over time, there’s little reason why they cannot be highly suitable for the modern home.
