Government to crack down on driving offences

There are many rules in place for motorists to bear in mind when they are getting from A to B on the highways and if they experience a lapse and commit driving offences, they can face potentially serious legal action, meaning they may require the assistance of a specialist motoring lawyer.

Meanwhile, the number of road users in need of professional assistance like this may rise. Recently, road safety minister Mike Penning announced new proposals that are currently under consultation. Under the terms of the suggestions, fixed penalty notices would be available for careless driving offences. Police would also be able to offer educational training as an alternative to endorsement.

The proposed fixed penalty for careless driving is £90, plus three points on drivers’ licences. The most serious examples will continue to go to court and offenders may face higher penalties than they do at present.

Commenting on the motivation behind the scheme, Mr Penning said: “Careless driving is a major public concern and a cause of deaths and injuries on our roads. These changes support both police enforcement and, for some cases, the associated offer of educational training for motorists unaware of the full, potential consequences of driving carelessly.

“We also need to make sure that the penalties for a wide range of fixed penalty motoring offences are set at reasonable levels, consistent with the potentially severe consequences of some infringements.”

However, Neil Greig from the Institute of Advanced Motorists said his organisation is “unconvinced” that the alterations would improve safety on the roads.

He added: “Careless driving covers a range of offences, varying from parking to highly irresponsible behaviour which deserves a court summons.”

These days, it is straightforward for drivers to enlist the help of a motoring lawyer when they face legal action in relation to offences committed on the road.
