Many pet owners assume that the health of their beloved animals is a very confusing area. However, the more we discover about what can harm our animals, the more we are starting to realise that focussing on their health will be much the same as focussing on our own.
For instance, just as second hand smoke can be a serious problem for humans, animals too will be at serious risk from secondary cigarette smoke. However, in many cases, such smoke can be even more damaging for an animal than it is for a human as the likes of cats and dogs will lick their fur and in turn take in huge quantities of unhealthy nicotine and tar which will have collected on their fluffy coat.
As such, those who live alone save for animals are urged to be just as careful about when and where they smoke, making sure that homes are well ventilated and that cigarettes butts are not left around for animals to chew.
When it comes to food, animal health and human health are very similar again, although many are unaware of this. Whilst it may seem that the majority of pet food is the same, many cheaper brands will have very poor quality ingredients and will lack focussed nutrition. By feeding animals poor quality food, an owner is doing the same as they would be by feeding a child nothing but junk food all day, every day. On top of this, most owners will then offer treats, which will be like following up a three course meal of quarter pounders with a large bag of sweets.
Therefore, for those who are unsure about how to look after the health of their cats or dogs, consider them as an extension of your family. If it is not something you would do with your children, there is a good chance that you should not do it with your cat or dog either.
