Virus hits printers worldwide

Lots of people all around the world use printers and printer ink. Indeed, many individuals and companies rely on such provisions and without them, they struggle to function successfully.

Recently, a number of printer users around the world were hit by a virus that caused massive print jobs to be sent to print servers. According to a Symantec blog post, this resulted in devices “printing garbage characters until the printer runs out of paper”.

The firm stated that the bug was Trojan.Milicenso and the worst hit regions were the US and India, followed by areas in Europe and South America.

Symantec noted that it originally encountered Trojan.Milicenso in 2010 and its initial investigation showed that it was basically a “malware delivery vehicle for hire”. It added: “The payload that is most commonly associated with this latest version is Adware.Eorezo; an adware targeting French speaking users.”

According to the firm, Trojan.Milicenso can arrive on a compromised computer by various means. For example, it can be contained within malicious email attachments. Also, users are at risk if they visit websites that host malicious scripts.

It went on to remark: “We have also encountered quite a large number of samples that appear to be packaged as a fake codec.”

Those affected by the virus may have wasted a lot of Samsung inks, Epson printer ink and so on. Thankfully, as long as people know where to source good value replacements, they should be able to stock up on the products they need without spending too much money. Many individuals may opt to shop for the items online.

Meanwhile, computer and internet security is now a major issue for companies and individuals around the world. Without implementing effective strategies, people can find they are targeted by the ever-increasing number of cyber criminals now operating across the globe.
